Identifying and analysing relevant and related visual examples:
Super Noodles:
The current design for the super noodles packet uses its iconic blue background along with another colour relating to the flavour, in this case yellow. The half and half colour choice does stand out but it appears quite cheap. The design appears cluttered as there are too many aspects, from the star to the fork with the noodles on. Over-design seems to be a problem with cheap design. Semantically speaking the star could be in place to represent quality, but the large scale paired with the name, seems childish, as if you are giving it a gold star for tasting good. The bold rounded typeface also hints at it's cheapness, as the typeface tries to be as in your face and friendly as possible.
Naked Noodle:
The Naked Noodle appears to be a high end instant noodle brand. This is due to the black background which hints at more luxurious product. It also has a strong colour contrast with the bright hot pink which is used sparingly to attract just enough attention. Overall the design is kept simple and spaced out appropriately. The type is kept simple and clear, the weight allows it to stand out enough to be read but it is not too bold as to appear cheap.
Good Hair Day Pasta (Concept):
A visual pun has been created as the pasta is made to look like different hairstyles, this personification adds humour as well as making pasta packaging more engaging. The clean minimal design also helps to give the pasta a high-end look. The white background allows the strong visual image to be the main focus, while the stylised type helps to support the overall quality of the design.
Kabuto Noodles
Kabuto also uses a simple design with minimal colours, the clear layout allows for a more organised design which doesn't seem cheap or tacky. The icon in the middle links with it's asian heritage clearly. There is also a strong colour contrast from the cream/yellow background to the red of the icon. Type is simple and clear, not too large but large enough to be seen clearly from a short distance.
Analysing these visual examples has allowed me to identify some of the aspects of design I need to take into account when doing my own design.
- Simple, clear, layout
- Not cluttered design
- Minimal colours
- Simple type that isn't too bold
