OUGD401 Practical Work Primary Research

I went down to my local shop to look at the different cereal brands and the packaging design that is used for them.

Children's cereal:
I decided that this is what i'd first be looking into seen as I will be designing a children's cereal box. What I noticed immediately is the bright vibrant colours that are used, usually with a strong background colour. A lot of the cereal for children also contained characters on, in a cartoon style, that is friendly and appealing. All of the boxes included a picture of the cereal that it contained. The branded children's cereal seemed to have larger images but overall the design is simple with not much going on in the background. However, for own branded or cheaper cereals they seem to go too over the top and try to put too much into the design. But then looking even cheaper, in Asda they have a smart price range and the designs here seemed to be very simple and not as child friendly, just more general. The typefaces used always seems to be some form of bubble or bold writing with a rounded sans-serif style.

General cereal:
Within the designs of everyday cereals there seems to be a strong focus on eating healthy with images and text to emphasise. The box designs still use bright colours but they aren't as garish and in your face, they seemed toned down. The typefaces used are still sans serif bubble writing but it doesn't seem as rounded and childish.
